St. Mary’s Students Enjoy Annual March Madness Tournament

St-Marys-Students-Enjoy-Annual-March-Madness-Tournament-2019_01 On Friday March 1st, a multitude of teams came out to compete in St. Mary Catholic Community School’s annual Wildcat March Madness 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament. This year’s tournament was held at Andrean High School in Merrillville. “This is a fun event that the whole family looks forward to each year. The students start thinking about their team names and chose t-shirt colors the year before in anticipation,” said organizer, Mrs. Melanie Light.

The tournament is a student-led event. Students in grades 5-8 create their teams, coach themselves, choose their teams names and colors, and call their own fouls and substitutions. Teams follow an example of the sportsmanship and camaraderie that St. Mary’s creates in their sports and other events. High school students who are St. Mary’s alumni helped run the tournament by managing the clock, keeping score, and keeping the games flowing.
