St. Mary’s Students Celebrate Indiana’s 201st Birthday

St-Marys-Indiana-BirthdayThe state of Indiana turned 201 years old on December 11, 2017. To celebrate, Fourth grade teachers, Mrs. Arianne Wong and Mrs. Kim Hise took their students at St. Mary Catholic Community School for a walk. They were headed to attend a birthday party for Indiana at the Crown Point Community Library.

The primary focus of the party was to introduce the students to the Indiana Room located on the second floor of the library. Librarian, Jeanene Letcher, led groups of students up to the room which is filled with information all about the Hoosier state. The students left the room wishing they had more time to explore the great resources.

St-Marys-Indiana-Birthday-2After a loud round of “Happy Birthday” was sung to kick off the party downstairs, parent volunteers helped facilitate groups of students at various stations. Games, such as Hangman, Pictionary, and Bingo, were all played with an Indiana History twist. The Indy 500 race was even simulated with a dice-rolling Hot Wheels competition! Cupcakes were decorated with blue and yellow icing to match the colors of our state flag.

Mrs. Wong’s number one goal in her Indiana History class is to make Indiana history come alive. With all the activities at the library centered around the state of Indiana, the fourth graders were able to take what they have learned and party like it was 1816!
