St. Mary’s School Delivers Food at Christmas Time

The annual food drive at St. Mary Catholic Community School in Crown Point wrapped up on the 15th of December when the student council took a trip to Catholic Charities in Gary. The Student Council is in charge of the food drive each year and tries to do something a little different each year to keep it interesting. Last year the school held a penny war to raise money to shop with. The year before that the school counted items in an effort to reach a certain number.

This year, the Student Council’s goal was to raise a large amount of quality food for those in need. Each student in the school was sent home with a plastic bag from Aldi’s that had a coupon attached to it. Over the next 12 school days, students managed to bring in nearly 450 bags of groceries, paper products, and hygiene products to donate to Catholic Charities and St. Mary’s parish food pantry, God’s Groceries.

Student Council President Julianne Go was excited about the amount of food donated. She said, “I’m really proud of what we have done as school for this food drive. It’s great to know that we’re donating a lot of quality food for those in need.” Jim Tucker, a teacher and student council advisor, believes that this is the largest amount of food the school has ever donated to Catholic Charities.
