St. Mary Catholic Community School hosted the Diocese of Gary CYO Spelling Bee on Thursday, February 16, 2017. This is the school’s fifth year hosting this event and the 45th year CYO will held a Spelling Bee competition. Participants from 14 local Catholic schools in Northwest Indiana competed in a fun and friendly spelling competition.
The divisions included: 3rd/4th grades combined, 5th/6th grades combined, and 7th/8th grades combined. All finalists received a participation medal and the top winners received a trophy. The winner from the 3rd/4th division was Jena Nall from St. Stanislaus Kostka in Michigan City, the winner from the 5th/6th division was Omar Datt from St. Casimir in Hammond, and the winner from the 7th/8th division was Serena Deprizio from St. Mary School in Crown Point.
