St. Mary’s 7th Graders See Some of the World’s Greatest Masterpieces

St-Mary's-School-The-Art-Institute-of-Chicago-02The seventh grade class from St. Mary Catholic Community School in Crown Point recently took a class trip to The Art Institute of Chicago.

Art teachers Carrie Kirby and Morag Thompson were accompanied by principal Tom Ruiz and 7th grade teachers Rachel Baker and Theresa McLouglin.

The vast and beautiful museum, which is considered one of the best in the world, holds many masterpieces. Students enjoyed viewing important paintings and sculptures and had the culturally enriching experience of seeing art firsthand and learning about the world through art.

Van Gogh, Monet, Seurat and Renoir are just a few of the French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists on display. Seurat's, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte which stands at 6'10"x10'1" is an intriguing example of the technique called Pointillism. Many of the students listed this piece among their favorites.

The hundreds of works of art viewed by students will undoubtedly impact them in their perception of the world and the importance of art. Student Council President, Lauren Garcia said, “We all enjoyed the trip and thought it was a great experience.”
