South Shore Railroad Plans Mock Casualty Exercise

NICTD-logoThe Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District in cooperation with the Town of Porter Fire Department will conduct a mass casualty exercise in the vicinity of Mineral Springs Road in Porter County on Saturday, May 31, 2014.

The purpose of the drill is to test our response and that of first responders to a mass casualty incident. The incident will involve a mock collision between an electrified passenger train and a diesel locomotive, with a hazardous materials discharge and downed electrical wire. The exercise will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude by 11:00 a.m.

NICTD periodically holds training sessions with local first responders so they may become familiar working around passenger and freight trains in an emergency situation. NICTD owns the South Shore commuter rail passenger service operating between South Bend and Chicago.
