PNW-Purdue-Northwest-Plays-Olivet-Nazarene-to-a-Draw-SaturdayPurdue Northwest Plays Olivet Nazarene to a Draw Saturday
Djordje Cancarevic put the Purdue University Northwest men’s soccer team on the board first, but Olivet Nazarene was able to equalize and the score stood tied for 65 minutes in a 1-1 draw in double-overtime Saturday at Dowling Park.

The Pride (2-3-2, 0-0-1 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) struck first in just the 8’ when junior Tulio Ribeiro (Itajuba, Brazil) delivered a perfect cross to the right side that found Cancarevic (Doylestown, Ohio/Chippewa), who finished for the first PNW goal of his career.

But Olivet Nazarene (2-3-2, 0-0-1) would respond before the half, as Blake Van Bruggen connected for his fourth goal of the season in the 38’ on an unassisted shot from inside the box.

Despite the Tigers being forced to play a man down after a red card, ONU would keep the Pride off the scoreboard for the entire second half and both overtime periods, as starting keeper Chris Taborn stopped five shots.

Junior Miguel David (Spring Valley, Calif./Bonita Vista) did a fine defensive job of his own, recording six saves against a strong Olivet Nazarene attack, which outshot PNW by a 15-13 margin.

Cancarevic led the Pride with four shots, three on goal, and Jose Andriano (Mexico City, Mexico), Alec Guarino (Saint John, Ind./Marian Catholic) and Afolabi Jacob (Lagos, Nigeria) finished with two shots each.

PNW returns to action Wed., Sept. 21, when the Pride travel to Robert Morris for a 6 p.m. CT start in Arlington Heights, Ill.

PNW sophomore Diego Pimentel (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Billingue Nuevo Mundo) also had a great showing this weekend, making it to the final of the backdraw before dropping a 14-16 third set tiebreak to Trai Ricardo.

"Awesome tournament for Diego this weekend," Tabic said. "He's got a lot of passion and that showed every time he was on court. Playing against Division 2 competition both days, he kept improving and kept getting tougher."

Freshman Jacob Adams (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) also picked up a first round win Saturday, topping Quincy's John Betts by scores of 4-6, 7-5, 10-6, before falling in the bracket play round to QU's Ryan McMillan.

"Great showing by our doubles team in the Main Draw of Flight 2," Tabic said. "Pimentel/Passett made it all the way to the final. Tough loss there, but the guys had fun and played some good tennis against solid competition."
