Ugarte's Goal in Double OT Lifts Purdue Northwest Over Stritch
Grant Ugarte’s goal with just 45 seconds remaining in double overtime gave the host Purdue University Northwest men’s soccer team a thrilling 2-1 conference win over Cardinal Stritch Tuesday.
After trailing the Wolves (6-4-3, 5-2-1 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) 1-0 for much of the second half, the Pride (6-4-3, 4-1-2) battled back to even the score, send the game into overtime and pick up their third CCAC win in a row.
Cardinal Stritch recorded the first goal of the match in the 80' after a curving shot from just outside the penalty box from Jack Hart found upper right 90 to put the Wolves up 1-0.
The Black and Gold would continue to battle, scoring the equalizing goal with under two minutes remaining in regulation. A pass from freshman Jaime Garcia (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) found Alec Guarino (Saint John, Ind./Marian Catholic) in front of the box, as Guarino scored his sixth goal of the season to send the match to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, both teams kept denying the oppositions scoring efforts until the final minute of play, when a pass from just inside midfield from Chris Rassel (St. John, Ind./St. John) found freshman defender Grant Ugarte (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn) on the left side of the box who connected on the game winning header for the Black and Gold.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Lozano (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll) recorded his third straight win in goal, coming up with incredible stops which halted multiple scoring chances from the Wolves.
Junior Zac Doepke (Troy, Mich./Troy) led the attack for PNW with four shots, four on goal, while Ugarte and Michael Brownsea (Albury, Austrailia/Albury) each recorded two shots each.
Purdue Northwest returns to action Saturday, Oct. 15, when the Pride travel to Roosevelt University for a CCAC contest starting at 2:30 p.m.
