Mens-Hoops-Wins-OT-Battle-Over-Ave-Maria-90-80Men's Hoops Wins OT Battle Over Ave Maria, 90-80 The Purdue University Northwest men’s basketball team picked up a 90-80 overtime victory over Ave Maria University in the final day of the Marietta Rappaport Holiday Classic at Keiser University.

The Pride (6-9) fought back after being down six points with under six minutes left in the second half to send the game to overtime, before capping off an 18-8 run in the OT period to defeat the Gyrenes. (3-10).

Tyree Coe (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) led all scorers with 29 points on 9-of-17 shooting, including a quartet of three-point field goals and nine rebounds.

Junior Torrance Johnson (Chicago Heights, Chicago Hope Academy) recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds while Mike Williams (Gary, Ind./Lew Wallace) notched12 points with six assists and four rebounds to round out the PNW leaders.

The Pride started off the game hot from the field, jumping out to a 20-4 run with 12:33 left in the opening period.

Ave Maria would cut their deficit to three points later in the period, but the Black and Gold would answer back to take a 48-35 lead heading in to the break.

After the Black and Gold were up 55-47 early on in the second half, the Gyrenes would battle back to take the lead, 59-57 with just over ten minutes remaining in the half.

The teams would continue to answer each other late in the second period, with both squads being even at 72-72 heading in to overtime.

PNW would take over in the final five minutes, being up 84-75 with 2:12 remaining before coming away with the 90-80 victory.

The Pride won the battle on the boards, 49-41, and shot 47 percent from the field compared to 35.1 percent from Ave Maria.

The Black and Gold return to action on Friday, Dec. 30. when they host Spring Arbor in a non-conference contest in Westville, Ind. at the Student Services and Activities Complex. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. (CT).

Coe Scores 23; Purdue Northwest Falls to No. 23 Keiser Tyree Coe scored 23 points to lead the Purdue University Northwest men’s basketball team in a 75-56 nonleague loss to No. 23 Keiser University (Fla.) Tuesday night in the first game of the Marietta Rappaport Holiday Classic.

Coe (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) made 9-of-17 shots from the field, including 5-of-11 from 3-point land, and added five rebounds, and two assists in the loss, while junior teammate Torrance Johnson (Chicago Heights, Ill./Chicago Hope Academy) notched his seventh double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Max Clifford (Franklin, Ind./Roncalli) chipped in 13 points to round out PNW’s leaders.

Purdue Northwest (5-9) returns to action Wednesday when the Pride take on Ave Maria (3-9), who fell to Marian (Ind.) 74-60 in the tournament’s first contest.

PNW trailed at the break to the Seahawks (10-2) – who won their seventh-straight game – by a score of 38-21. Keiser opened the game on a 5-0 run, but PNW managed to respond, thanks to two triples by Coe, by taking its only lead of the game, 13-12, at the 14:45 mark.

A Coe made layup tied the game at 20-all with 10:22 to go in the first half, but the Seahawks would close out the frame on a 18-1 run to take the momentum heading into the locker room.

The closest the Pride would get was 12, 44-32, when Clifford drained a 3 at the 16:34 mark, but KU would answer with five straight points to hold off any comeback.

PNW shot 35.3 percent (18-of-51) from the field and 33.3 percent (9-of-27) from 3-point land, compared to 37.1 percent (26-of-70) and 33.3 percent (6-of-18) for Keiser.

The Seahawks scored 34 points off 26 PNW turnovers, while committing just seven of their own to help capture the win.

Purdue Northwest will take on Ave Maria beginning at 4 p.m. CT Wednesday at the Contess de Hoernle Student Life Center.
