Purdue University Calumet will celebrate the Chinese New Year with singers, musicians, dancers, games and food at 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 28 in Alumni Hall of the Student Union & Library.
Musical and other performances will take place from 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. The Games of Skill also will be played with audience members responding to questions about Chinese culture, according to Chinese Student Association Vice President Weitao Wang.
11th campus celebration
Dinner will be served from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., and karaoke singing is scheduled from 6:45 to 8 p.m.

Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year lasts for 15 days. According to Chinese legend, a mystical, man-eating predator beast attacked villagers every New Year’s Eve until a stranger who arrived at the village one New Year’s Eve used firecrackers, fire and red banners to chase away the beast.
The Purdue Calumet Chinese Student Association and Northwest Indiana Chinese School/Chinese Community have organized the celebration, which is being sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students, International Programs Office, Multi-Culture Campus Council, and the Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation.
