Purdue Federal sets kids up for financial success with Youth Accounts Program

Are you unsure how to teach your kids about money? Let the friendly team at Purdue Federal Credit Union’s 113th & Broadway Branch in Crown Point guide you.

Purdue Federal empowers kids to learn about finances from an early age through products including a youth savings account and a student checking account with debit card as well as tools like educational blogs and calculators to financial literacy resources for families and local schools.

“Ultimately, our goal is to build a trusted relationship with our youth members and teach them all the ways we can help them during school, in college, and beyond,” said Purdue Federal Community Relations Specialist, Molly Milcarek. “We offer free resources through our partners at Banzai to help youth learn about topics like the importance of saving, identifying needs vs wants, budgeting and money management before they leave home.”

Banzai is designed for kids 18 years and younger. Once enrolled in Banzai, kids and their families can access all the program’s resources 24/7 online.

“We know with busy lives outside of work and school, it can be hard for parents and guardians to tackle financial literacy on their own,” said Milcarek. “We provide the resources for free in a unique, organized portfolio to use when it fits their individual schedules.”

Learning how to manage money is also fun at Purdue Federal. For example, kids can show their school pride by getting a high school debit card design. Two local schools are currently represented, but Purdue Federal hopes to expand that list soon.

“We offer student-designed high school debit cards so students, parents and fans with a Purdue Federal checking account can carry their colors,” Milcarek said. “Andrean High School and Hanover Central High School both have a student-designed debit card, and we’re looking to add more Northwest Indiana high schools in the future.”

Families should watch for special offers and opportunities throughout the year.

“We run promotions every year, typically focusing on Youth Month during April and back-to-school perks in August,” said Milcarek.

Now through October 31, 2022, kids ages 14 through 18 who open a new Student Checking account with debit card and paperless statements are eligible to receive a $50 bonus. “We love our members and community,” said MIlcarek. "Stop by our branch and learn about these and other reasons Purdue Federal was named the #1 Credit Union in Indiana by Forbes in 2022."
