From beer cans to pop bottles and pieces of cardboard, shopping bags, fast food containers and more, it’s estimated that over 51 billion pieces of litter land on American roads each year. Litter is not just unsightly, it also lowers property values, impacts community economies and local housing markets and lowers the overall quality of life. The cost of keeping our roads clean is placed at roughly $11.5 billion each year.
Many groups and organizations take pride in their community and work toward improving this situation, one road at a time. Purdue Federal Credit Union (PFCU) is proud to be among those working to better the communities they serve.
Roughly a dozen volunteers from PFCU met up with several members of the La Porte Jaycees this weekend to clean up some of the area’s roads.
“We’ve been looking for something to do that would let us give back to the community, while at the same time maintaining social distancing and we figured what better way than to do a little road clean up,” said Melissa Vega, Branch Manager for PFCU in La Porte.
“We partnered up with the La Porte Jaycees, with plans to clean up a stretch of State Road 2, from the La Porte County Fairground area, westbound to 400 West. The Jaycees have adopted that stretch of roadway and they’re always looking for opportunities to keep it clean, so we decided to step in and help,” she said.
Vega, a lifelong resident of La Porte county, says she’s proud to be able to help.
“I love this community, and I especially love that I work for an organization that supports their employees’ efforts to invest in worthy causes.”

“We’re all about striving to do the best we can to better our community and help it grow, so this is just one of the ways that we can do something safe to also give back to this area,” Moncheski said.
“Especially at this time, when we’re all looking for something to do, this is a good way to socialize while also exercising social distancing and also do something good for the community. We’re always happy to partner with great organizations like Purdue Federal Credit Union who support our mission.”
“Purdue Federal Credit Union strongly believes in supporting the communities they serve, and one of the ways they show that is by giving employees VTO or volunteer time off,” said Matt Scheuer, Area Sales Manager for PFCU. “Employees can use their VTO to volunteer for various charitable causes around the area.”
