Public Enemy Fest to be held at Lake County Fairgrounds

Public-Enemy-Fest-2013Hometown Happenings will be hosting its inaugural Public Enemy Fest and 5k Run/Walk at the Lake County Fairgrounds on Sunday, June 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The 5k run/walk, or 1k fun run and walk, will begin at 10 a.m., with registration starting at 9 a.m. Participants may register through Friday, June 21, for $15 for adults or $10 for children 12 and under. Participants of all ages may register on race day for $25.

Each race participant will be able to vote on their favorite local charity. The charity with the most votes will receive a portion of the race registration fee.

According to the event organizer Tim Fealy, Hometown Happenings wanted to use local history to benefit the community.

In addition to the 5k run/walk, Public Enemy Fest will host the storied wooden gun John Dillinger used in his escape from the Crown Point Jail. The South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority, who owns the original, will be displaying the wooden gun, which hasn’t been within Crown Point city limits since Dillinger’s escape in 1934.

Other highlights of the Public Enemy Fest include one of the cars used by Johnny Depp in the movie “Public Enemy”, a car show, the northwest Indiana SWAT team, demonstrations by the Crown Point and Lake County K9 units, a prohibition-era costume contest, as well as live entertainment provided by HGS Music and food and merchandise vendors.
