Porter County Taste of Care 2014

Seniors, veterans, and members of the community filled the Porter County Expo Center Thursday evening for the 3rd Annual Porter County Taste of Care sponsored by Prompt Ambulance. The Taste of Care highlights the dining capacities of local medical facilities, including Avalon Springs and Rittenhouse Senior Living.

Chefs put their best foot – and their best food – forward. Decadent desserts and inventive dishes like ahi tuna nachos competed for the People’s Choice Award. Decorated in red, white, and blue to honor our seniors, the Expo Center held ambulances, a Meals on Wheels truck, and dozens of tables full of those looking to enjoy a bite to eat while supporting the community.

Prompt Ambulance puts on Taste of Care is a fundraiser that supports The Porter County Triad and Honor Flight Chicago.

“Since we transitioned these events into a fundraiser, the response from everyone involved has been outstanding,” said Ron Donahue of Prompt Ambulance, “The funds raised from the Porter County Taste are split between Honor Flight Chicago and The Porter County Triad. Both these organizations do tremendous things for our community and the individuals helped are our neighbors. It is amazing to me how many WWII veterans live in our region and Honor Flight gives them a well deserved once in a lifetime opportunity.”

“The Triad is a group of community leaders who gather together on behalf of our senior citizens,” said Linda Levan, who volunteers for Porter Country Triad. “We work with the Sheriff of the county and any other law enforcement that wants to be involved on behalf of our seniors.”

Honor Flight Chicago serves veterans by giving them a trip to Washington, DC to visit the monuments and memorials. Both the Triad and Honor Flight Chicago hugely benefit from Prompt Ambulance’s support.

“Through the Taste of Care last year, Prompt Ambulance really projected us back to into a living status,” said Levan. “With the donation of the proceeds we were able to really get back into the community. Prompt Ambulance has been key in helping us do that.”

The Taste of Care also highlights the wonderful medical organizations in the community.

“If I had to pick out one reason why Taste Of Care is a success I would say it is because we have been blessed with a great group of organizations working together,” said Donahue. “All of the participating facilities really make this an outstanding success. The culinary skills from our region's medical community are amazing! Each participant puts tremendous energy into making Taste of Care a success.”
