Over 650 Teachers Credit Union team members volunteer across Indiana in annual Day of Giving

Over 650 Teachers Credit Union employees spread out across Indiana on Monday, October 14 to participate in the 2019 Day of Giving. Participants spent the day volunteering at 43 organizations and nonprofits, ranging from food banks to hospitals. Around the region, TCU helped at places such as Lakeshore PAWS, Tradewinds Services, the Duneland Family YMCA, and the Northwest Indiana Food Bank.

“TCU understands that team members want to find a sense of purpose at work, and one way to do that is to give back to our local communities,” said TCU’s Public Relations Manager Kara Kelly. “The Day of Giving offers TCU team members the time and opportunity to volunteer for causes that are important to them and make a lasting impact.”

This was TCU’s second annual Day of Giving. The credit union learned a lot from its experience the first time around.

“The biggest challenge in our first year was identifying enough organizations that could host multiple volunteers on a specific day, during a set period of time,” Kelly said. “To overcome this, TCU developed a targeted approach focused on partnering with nonprofits that had bigger projects to complete, such as preparing a community garden for winter.”

TCU also approached more organizations that represent a wider range of causes. Some needed help with large projects or repairs, such as the Duneland Family YMCA, which used the extra hands to do painting, repairs, and yard work. At Tradewinds, an organization that provides services to kids and adults with developmental disabilities, TCU team members participated in more personal activities, such as helping clients with arts and crafts.

“A point of pride at TCU is the commitment all our team members have to the communities in which we live and work,” said TCU President and CEO Paul Marsh in a press release. “Our Annual Day of Giving is a wonderful way to put our values into action in a way that supports the many great organizations serving our friends and neighbors.”

The Day of Giving is just one way that TCU team members give back to their communities. In 2018, they recorded over 14,000 service hours, while TCU and the TCU Foundation contributed more than $750,000 to organizations across Indiana.

“We hope the Day of Giving contributes to TCU team members finding that sense of purpose at work and opens the door to lasting connections with the community organizations where they spent their time,” Kelly said. “We also just want them to have fun. There’s real joy in giving back and the Day of Giving is a great way to celebrate that.”
