Operation Glow Blue to Honor, Thank Crown Point Police

First-United-Methodist-crown-Point-Blue-Lights-2015At the meeting of the Crown Point City Council on July 6th, Mayor David Uran signed a proclamation designating July as “Glow Blue for Crown Point Police” month, and urging the citizens of Crown Point to place a blue lightbulb in their windows from August 2-9th as a show of support for local police. This proclamation is in support of a project hosted by First Methodist Church of Crown Point.

In a cultural climate that seems to draw lines of distrust between police and the public, this program is aimed at bridging that divide. “The premise is really quite simple,” says Mark Wilkins, Senior Pastor of First United Methodist. “We want to allow the average citizen, who day in and day out probably has little direct contact with our police, to say thank you in a tangible way to those who serve and protect them.”

Free Blue Lightbulbs to be Distributed
Starting July 5th, 1,500 blue lightbulbs have been made available free of charge to the citizens of Crown Point. Residents are being asked to place these lights where they will be visible to the street from August 2nd-9th as a show of support and appreciation to local police. These bulbs, donated by Phillips Lighting Company, are available at 11 distribution locations throughout the city: First United Methodist Church, 352 S. Main St; 12 Islands Restaurant, 114 S Main St #1; Betty's Bakery, 924 S Court St.; City Water Department; Purdue Technology Center, 9800 Connecticut Dr.; Trinity Lutheran Church 101 N East St.; The Hot Dog Guy, SE Corner of the Square; Saylor's Barber Shop, 17 North Court St.; Old Court House Office; Station 21, 201 North Main St.; St. Mary’s Church, 321 East Joliet St. According to project Chair Courtney Eckhoff, the public reaction has already far exceeded expectations, with the demand necessitating plans to possibly augment the number of bulbs being supplied to 2,000.

Public Rally August 2nd
On the night of August 2nd, a public rally will be held on the steps of the Old Courthouse in Crown Point as a sign of support and unity. The event will feature music, and several speakers from the community including recipients of heroic efforts of the Crown Point Police Department.
