Northwest Health – La Porte today announced that Carrie Ann Fitzhugh, RN is the recipient of its 2020 Nursing Excellence Award.
This peer-nominated award, created in honor of 2020 being the “Year of the Nurse,” and in recognition of the critical role nurses have played in treating patients throughout the COVID pandemic, was open to qualifying RNs and LPNs working in a direct patient care position who consistently demonstrate characteristics synonymous with nursing excellence.
Carrie was nominated by several peers for her contributions towards patient care; especially the time she spends getting to know her patients and connecting with them.

Carrie joined Northwest Health – La Porte in 2018 as nurse and works in many of the hospital’s patient units. She is known for her contagious positive attitude and for spending time at the bedside talking to patients and their families to discuss treatment and calm their fears. Carrie jumps in to assist other staff members with tasks. She works in conjunction with Certified Nurse Assistants to bathe patients and lighten the load of others. Before coming to Northwest Health – La Porte, Carrie worked as an RN in a skilled nursing facility.
In addition to receiving the Nursing Excellence Award itself, Carrie received a cash prize and a quintessential book on nursing, written by Florence Nightingale in 1859, that remains relevant to today’s modern nursing attitudes and skills.
