As winter kicks into full gear, North Township Trustee Frank J. Mrvan wants to make sure seniors living in East Chicago, Hammond, Highland, Munster, and Whiting are aware of all the services available to them.
The Trustee’s office provides services and hosts events for seniors throughout the year, but as the temperatures plummet as quickly as the snow banks, some services are more pertinent than others.
The Shoveling Assistance program matches snowed-in seniors with local volunteers who can help shovel seniors out. Get on the list by calling the North Township Snow Hotline at (219) 306-1344.
North Township Dial-A-Ride provides curb-to-curb bus service at no cost. Whether you need to see the doctor or stock up on groceries, the Dial-A-Ride program is accessible to senior living and traveling within North Township. The buses are accessible and operate between 7 and 5. Pick-ups must be scheduled 24 hours in advance and reservations can be made by emailing email@example.com or calling (219) 932-2530, pressing 4 and staying on the line.
When leaving the house is not an option, North Township is prepared to help, having teamed up with Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana to deliver hot meals to qualifying seniors.
“There is no underestimating the value of daily interaction along with nutrition,” said Sandy Noe, Meals on Wheels NWI Executive Director, and Meals on Wheels gives all that and more.
While Meals on Wheels can provide a well-being check along with the hot meals, they also provide pet food for seniors’ softest companions. Plus, they make sure all homes are in working order.
Of the volunteers, Noe said, “They don’t leave until they know everyone is safe and well.”
“I feel better knowing that some of our most vulnerable people are being cared for, that they will have something to eat. No one should be hungry,” Mrvan said.
To see if you qualify for Meals on Wheels, contact Virginia Carter at (219) 932-2530.
For emergencies, seniors can call 2-1-1 at any time of day.
“The 211 system provides a vital safety net for the most vulnerable members of our community,” Mrvan said. “These are the kinds of emergencies that come without warning and strike those we hold most dear.”
The North Township Trustees Office offers many services to seniors throughout the year. From outings to casinos and Cubs games to dining experiences like the Mother’s Day Dinner Dance and monthly luncheons, Frank J. Mrvan wants to make sure nobody falls through the cracks. Whether it means having access to the resources they need or attending just-for-them events, there’s always a way for our seniors to feel a part of the community they helped make great.
Along with the resources listed above, there is one last senior luncheon scheduled for 2018. Call (219) 932-2530 extension 2 to reserve your seat at the baked ham luncheon on December 12.
