NIPSCO shines bright through volunteerism and community impact

When it comes to making a difference in our communities, NIPSCO is lighting the way with its commitment to volunteerism and engagement. 

“NIPSCO exists to deliver safe, reliable energy that drives value for our customers, and it’s our mission to help create strong and sustainable communities where our employees and customers live and work,” said Rick Calinski, Director of Public Affairs and Economic Development at NIPSCO. “Volunteerism plays a significant role in fulfilling our mission.”

Each year, employees come together to give back to the community, whether through volunteering their time, organizing donation drives, or supporting local charities. These efforts not only make a meaningful impact, but also foster teamwork and strengthen the company’s culture.

To support this charitable effort, NIPSCO offers dozens of group volunteer opportunities each year. These events include a wide range of efforts, such as community beautification projects, stocking food pantries, delivering meals, and more.

“We’re privileged to be able to serve the community,” said Calinksi, “It means so much for us to truly make a difference.”

NIPSCO honors this commitment in several ways throughout the year. One such example is the Dollars for Doers program. The program provides $20 for each hour of individual employee volunteer work, with a maximum of 25 hours contributed ($500) per year, to an eligible 501(c)(3) non-profit on the employee’s behalf. 

“Local organizations and nonprofits are the foundation of a strong community,” said Calinski. “When they do well, the community does well. As a dedicated corporate citizen, it is truly a privilege to serve our customers and communities, and to have employees that are willing to always give back to those who are most in need.”

For the last 14 years, NIPSCO has held a month-long volunteer campaign called Charity of Choice. Originally focused on fundraising, Charity of Choice pivoted after the COVID-19 pandemic to focus on hands-on volunteering. Partnering with local community groups and organizations, NIPSCO employees select from a variety of volunteer opportunities, working together to support each organization’s unique needs.

In September of 2024, more than 300 NIPSCO employees contributed an impressive 1,200 volunteer hours across 33 organizations, creating a significant impact in just one month through its Charity of Choice campaign.

“Through team volunteering events across our service area, our employees not only support local organizations but also build meaningful, lasting relationships with nonprofits that continue beyond the campaign,” Calinski said. “Not only has this been a great way to make a difference in our communities, but it’s also allowed our teams to step out of their daily routines and work together. The team bonding behind it has been invaluable."

NIPSCO’s spirit of giving and of volunteering lasts throughout the year. Supported with grants, volunteer walks, and educational initiatives, NIPSCO employees are living the company’s mission every day. In fact, NIPSCO’s recent Hope for the Holidays campaign donated a total of $110,000 across 21 community serving organizations. 

Throughout 2025 and beyond, NIPSCO plans to amplify its community impact by expanding its volunteer programs, encouraging even more employees to get involved.  

“Many of our employees volunteer in the communities that we serve,” said Calinski. “Our leadership empowers employees to get out and make a difference in organizations that strengthen our communities.”
