NIPSCO Continues Upgrades to Energy Infrastructure

rot1On Monday, March 28, NIPSCO announced plans to begin work on a natural gas upgrade project in the Towns of Munster and Highland. This project is just one of the existing and future investments planned as part of the company’s long-term effort to modernize the gas and electric infrastructure across its entire service area.

Beginning in April, NIPSCO will start construction to replace 3.5 miles of underground natural gas transmission lines. Construction will begin from the Indiana/Illinois state line along Fisher Street to Indianapolis Boulevard and continue through the Ridge Road intersection to Highland. Construction is expected to run from April through November 2016.

Notifications have been sent to residents in the immediate area and NIPSCO has been working closely to coordinate logistics with Town officials, the school system and the hospital. As work approaches, NIPSCO will also work with local media and the Towns of Highland and Munster to keep residents notified of project schedules, road and bike trail closures and other updates.

Environmental surveys for the project were completed to fully assess environmentally sensitive features within the proximity of the project. As with every project, NIPSCO's project team worked with the regulating agencies and local stakeholders to avoid, minimize and mitigate environmental impacts.

NIPSCO reminds customers who travel near construction areas to please exercise caution to ensure personal safety and the safety of construction crews working on this project.

The new natural gas lines are being installed to provide safer and more reliable service to area residents and businesses in the future.
