Sept. 6 Indiana Black Legislative Caucus Symposium 8:00a.m. -The Indiana Black Legislative Caucus Legislative Symposium will be held Sept. 6 at the IUN, Library Conference Ctr. 3400 Broadway. Registriation begins at 8:00a.m.

Sept. 6 Drive-in Movies at Marquette Park 6:00p.m. -The community is in for a special treat Friday, Sept. 6 as Gary’s Marquette Park will be transformed into a drive-in movie theater. For only $10 per car, moviegoers will enjoy two family friendly films – “The Croods” and “The Tree of Life” starring Sean Penn and Brad Pitt. Gates at 6918 Oak Avenue open at 6:00p.m. with the first film starting at dusk.

In order to deliver the full drive-in theater effect, there will be vendors selling movie snacks including popcorn, hotdogs and elephant ears. There will also be an inflatable fun area where children can play until the movies begin. Attendees will be able to tune in to the film using their car radios. Going forward, the goal is to feature drive-in movie night the first Friday of each month from May to October. Sept. 7 Gary City Court Community Picnic 12:00p.m. -Judge Deidre Monroe and the Gary City Court staff will host a Community Picnic Saturday, Sept. 7 at Tolleston Park, 12:00p.m. – 4:00p.m. The community is welcome and asked to bring school supplies for children.

Sept. 7 Midtown Community Block Party 12:00p.m. -The Central District Organizing Project will host a Midtown Community Block Party, Sat. Sept. 7 from 12:00p.m. – 5:00p.m. on the corner of 24th & Massachusetts St.

Sept. 9 3rd District Community Meeting 5:30p.m. -There will be a 3rd District Community Meeting hosted by Councilwoman Mary Brown Monday, Sept. 9 at the Tolleston Park Pavilion, 1500 Rutledge St. at 5:30p.m. The topics of discussion will include the 5x5x5 Neighborhood Revitalization Project.

Sept. 11 City of Gary September 11th Ceremony 8:00a.m. -The City of Gary will host its annual September 11th Commemoration Ceremony to remember those who lost their lives at Ground Zero and to honor the fire and police personnel for their heroic efforts. The ceremony will take place on the steps of Gary City Hall, 401 Broadway at 8:00a.m. The Wirt-Emerson choir will perform a special selection. The community is invited to attend.

Sealed bids for the Demolition of 461 Broadway Former Sheraton Hotel will be received and opened by the City of Gary Redevelopment Commission, 839 Broadway, 2nd Floor, Suite S200, Gary, Indiana, until the Project agenda item is called by the Board of Redevelopment Commissioner’s at their Board meeting, on Wednesday, October 16, 2013. When the Project agenda item is called by the Commission, the time for submittal of all bids will be closed and bids will be publicly opened and read. The Board meeting is scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm local time.

A MANDATORY Pre-Bid Meeting will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. local time, on Tuesday, September 17, 2013. The Pre-Bid Meeting will convene at the former main lobby entrance on the north side of the hotel building located at 461 BROADWAY, Gary, Indiana. Following the opening discussion, attendees will tour the building to view existing conditions affecting the Work, including calculation of a visual estimation of quantities of materials to be removed from the Project Site. All bidders are required to attend the Pre-Bid meeting and subsequent tour of the structure representing site conditions. Failure to attend the Pre-Bid meeting will disqualify a bidder. Copies of the Bid Document may be obtained from the office of the Department of Redevelopment upon the deposit of $25.00 for each. The amount of the deposit is non-refundable. 1,000 Gary Businesses to receive free training

Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson joined two business partners and the Gary Chamber of Commerce in launching the Urban Entrepreneur Initiative (UEI). Thanks to this partnership, a total of 1,000 Gary small business owners will receive free training and accounting assistance. The program includes donations of resources to local entrepreneurs worth up to $250,000, including Five Plus Trax, a cloud computing dashboard application designed to help small business owners better understand and manage their companies’ finances, specially-designed start-up training using the “Business Basics” curriculum, and space in a City-owned facility that will serve as the UEI office and entrepreneurs’ resource center. Two-day Education Celebration hosted by the Gary Schools with College Bands

The Gary Community School Corporation is hosting a two-day celebration for education. On Friday, September 20 Morehouse marching band kick it off by hosting a free performance for the community at the West Side football stadium - 900 Gerry St. Doors open at 5 p.m. On Saturday, September 21 Central State University will lead us out as the parade steps off at 10 a.m. and will culminate with a picnic where more entertainment, free school supplies, food, haircuts and more will be offered.
