The Miller Woods is awakening! This week’s Douglas Center open house (100 S. Lake St.) will feature the dynamic environmental projects of local non-profit Save the Dunes on Saturday, April 12. Cathy Martin, Land and Advocacy Specialist, will be on hand from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. to discuss the projects her organization is currently doing to protect the environment of Northwest Indiana.

RAILCATS TO HOST TRYOUTS
The Gary South Shore RailCats will host an Open Player Tryout Camp at U. S. Steel Yard on Wednesday, April 30th. The tryout is free and registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. for position players and 12:00 noon for pitchers. All players 18 and older are eligible to register for the camp, there is a $40 registration fee. Players who are trying out must bring their own baseball equipment, including cleats, gloves, wooden bats and catcher’s gear. Upon arriving at U. S. Steel Yard, players should enter through the RailCats Entry Gate on Stadium Plaza – between Fourth and Fifth Avenue – and head to the field for registration. DRIVE-IN MOVIES ON THE LAKE RETURN TO MARQUETTE PARK – VENDORS WANTED
The Gary Parks Department is excited to announce the return of Drive-In Movies by the Lake beginning the first Friday in May and every first Friday through October! The first movie we will show is the super popular “Frozen.” We need your feedback on what other movies should be shown! APPLY FOR THE JAY-Z SCHOLARSHIP
The Shawn Carter Foundation Scholarship provides financial support to high school students as well as undergraduate students entering college for the first time. The purpose of the scholarship is to help under-served students who may not be eligible for other scholarships. Students who have either graduated from high school or earned their G.E.D. may apply. Minimum grade point average is 2.0. Students must have a strong desire to go to college and earn their degree. Students must also have a desire to give back to their communities. The scholarship fund was established by Gloria Carter and and her son Shawn Carter (Shawn Carter is better known as hip-hop rapper Jay-Z) to offer a unique opportunity to students who have been incarcerated or faced particular life challenges but still want to pursue higher education. The program gives them a chance that most other programs do not offer. The Carter Foundation is a firm believer in helping young people not only reach their career goals but also establish a secure future. Students up to age 25 may apply. The scholarship can be used for tuition, room and board, books, fees and other college-related expenses. All high school seniors, undergraduate students at two-year or four-year institutions and vocational or trade school students are eligible. The deadline for the 2014 application is April 30, 2014. The award amount is usually $1,500 - $2,500.
