More than 275 students from Neighbors’ Educational Opportunities (NEO) in Portage graduated Thursday night with their high school diplomas or HSE’s (high school equivalency). NEO offers both high school and adult education classes for any individual who needs an alternative path in their education.
NEO’s public high school, New Vistas, had 57 graduates. Student speaker JhoryAnne Nevers noted that the structure of New Vistas is incredibly unique, allowing students to return to high school to earn their diplomas no matter their age or circumstances they’ve faced earlier in life. Nevers, who previously left high school to travel across the United States, said the relationships she made at New Vistas felt like family.
NEO’s adult education program and HSE testing site had 220 students who received their HSE’s. When student Angelica Galvez addressed her classmates, she described her educational journey. Galvez first came to NEO to learn English after immigrating to the United States with her husband and young children. She went on to earn not only her HSE but also a paraprofessional certification and a CNA certification. Galvez said that NEO gave her the opportunity to now teach and helped others.
Neighbors’ Educational Opportunities is a locally governed 501(c)3 that believes education transforms futures. The next session of adult education classes begins July 9.
