Munster Police Department: Preventing Thefts from Vehicles & Holiday Scams

Munster-PoliceThroughout this holiday season, residents are encouraged to follow these important safety tips to help prevent criminal activity:

ALWAYS keep your vehicle locked (see attached flyer), even at gas pumps or if you are walking away from your vehicle for a short time.

ALWAYS remove all valuables from inside of your vehicle such as briefcases, laptops, cell phones, backpacks, GPS units, phone chargers, and loose change. Never leave these types of items in plain view inside of your vehicle.

Keep your homes well-lit and visible from the outside by using dusk to dawn lighting, motion-detecting lighting, and timed lighting. Trim bushes below the window line and trim trees so that your home is visible from the street.

Beware of scams by phone or by people who may come to your door. Never give money, personal information, or bank account information to individuals who you do not know. Only send money to charities directly that you know are legitimate. Talk to individuals at your front door through a window or a locked storm door.

Be careful about individuals who are going door-to-door asking to shovel snow. These individuals require a soliciting permit and you should only allow people to shovel your snow who you know and trust. Never allow a stranger onto your property or into your home.

Beware of pickpockets in stores, and try to shop with a friend if possible. Men should shop with their wallet in their front pocket and women should keep their purses zipped up and slung in front of them. Never leave a purse inside of your shopping cart at the store, or on the floor/hanging on the back of a chair when you are at a restaurant.

Don't leave purchased items in plain view inside of your vehicle. Make multiple trips or store items inside of your trunk out of plain view if possible.

Keep your children close by you in stores or malls, which will be crowded this holiday season. Talk with them about strangers and come up with a plan in case they get lost. Advise them to go to someone who works at a store or to a security guard for help.

Always report suspicious activity in your neighborhood or in the business districts to the Munster Police Department immediately by calling 219-836-6600 or 911 if it is an emergency. We hope that everyone has a safe holiday season.
