Mini Golf at Crown Point Library a Smashing Success

crown-point-library-mini-golf-01The Crown Point Community Library would like to thank area businesses and the Crown Point community who supported the 2nd annual “A Hole Lot of Fun” mini golf event on Saturday, April 12, 2014. Participants explored the library in a fun and unique way. Decorated holes with obstacles and a handmade gutter system for one hole that ran down our main staircase created a challenge and a lot of enthusiasm for all the golfers! The course ended in the “Family Fun Zone” (in the three meeting rooms) which included games, face painting, a balloonist, and refreshments free to the golfers.

Additional parking was made available at the Wheeler Middle School parking lot, and Molley the Trolley provided free transportation to and from the library throughout the event. Participants even boarded the trolley just to “take a ride” around the square.

This year’s event was a smashing success, with over 450 golfers of all ages playing 18 holes. We surpassed our number of golfers (250) from last year’s event by 1:00 p.m. and served 1,946 people throughout the day – a record number since we opened in October, 2012.

In addition to kicking off National Library week (April 13-19) with our mini golf event, the Friends group also incorporated the celebration of “School Library Month” with a hole decorating contest open to all Crown Point schools. Golfers voted for their favorite hole the day of the event, and three winning schools received a cash prize to purchase books for their school library. Six schools participated: St. Mary’s Catholic, Eisenhower, Solon Robinson, Lake Street, MacArthur and Timothy Ball. The winning schools were 1st place, Solon Robinson; 2nd Place, Eisenhower; and 3rd place, Lake Street. The hole decorating contest was so much fun and the ideas the schools came up with were great! Their decorated holes really made the golf course more interesting and fun. Special thanks to MacArthur School for donating their elaborate hole decorations to the library for future golf events.

We would also like to express our thanks and gratitude for the partnership we have forged with the Crown Point High School Industrial Technology Department, who constructed our 18-hole indoor mini golf course for us. You read correctly…students built our course! The department’s Woodworking and Cabinetry class students did a wonderful job and their workmanship was excellent.

This unique fundraiser serves a dual purpose – it brings the community together and raises money to support library programming. As our community grows, so do our needs for programming for all ages. All the proceeds from this event will allow us to offer unique traveling exhibits, author/illustrator visits, literary impersonators, musical performances and more to expand the traditional boundaries of library programming.

crown-point-library-mini-golf-02We also wish to thank our generous event sponsors: Presenting Sponsor, McCarroll Dental; Hole In One Sponsor, NIPSCO; Family Fun Zone Sponsors, McColly Realty and Friends of the Crown Point Library; Hole sponsors, Liss Carstar, Centier Bank, City of Crown Point, Crown Town Grill, Distinctive Dental, Janet Katich, Olthoff Homes, Lake County Saddle & Spurs 4-H Club and a special thanks to Crown Point Parks & Recreation for the use of Molley the Trolley.
