With the COVID-19 pandemic still in effect, personal care both physically and mentally is important during this stressful time. In the wake of this crisis, Frank J. Mrvan, North Township Trustee has partnered with several local mental health specialists to offer a free, 24-hour hotline for those who need a little extra help navigating personal struggles.
Mrvan assembled a number of township employees to form the COVID-19 rapid response team to find ways to meet community needs, and the North Township Mental Health Wellness Hotline soon became a resource. Addressing residents’ mental health during this time of anxiety and isolation was one of Mrvan’s highest priorities.
“If you’re feeling overwhelmed and anxious about everything that is going on, we’re here to help,” said Kiyla Holloway, Community Development Coordinator for Frank J. Mrvan, North Township Trustee. “Even if you just need to talk to someone, we’re ready to help however we can.”
To get the hotline started, the township partnered with Munster-based mental health wellness center Clarity Clinic and Highland-based Regional Mental Health Center. These centers have provided several mental health professionals to help with various anxiety, depression, and other psychological needs. In addition, a group of volunteers from Mental Health America of Northwest Indiana is also helping to provide additional services and support.
“These partnerships were possible through Frank J. Mrvan,” Holloway said. “He’s a very community-centric person and is dedicated to serving the community in any way possible.”
The service is user-friendly and easily accessible. When you call the number -1-800-706-2751 - Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., you will be connected to a trained professional. This individual will listen to the issues you are having and assess the overall situation. From there, a connection will be made to Clarity Clinic for additional support. Calls outside of those hours are connected to Regional Mental Health.
“Being a part of this endeavor is a feeling that really can’t be described,” Holloway said. “It’s great to be part of a community effort that’s going above and beyond for all the people in Northwest Indiana.”
