Frankie Woods McCullough Academy for Girls is heading to New York and will be featured on CNN and The Morning Show. McCullough will talk about the progress they’re making in Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow Contest.
Teacher Kim Stivers, along with sixth-grader Courtney Blakely and seventh-grader Angel Wells, will present their Community Gardens project to a panel and prepare for the news. “Community Gardens will address the food desert in our city. A food desert is an area in which growing fresh produce can be difficult,” Stivers said.
Dr. Cheryl L. Pruitt, Superintendent of Schools, said this is an exciting time for Frankie Woods McCullough Academy for Girls and for Gary Community Schools. “I’m so proud of their accomplishments and they are to be commended. So far, they've won a $20,000 technology package from Samsung and will receive a $35,000 technology package at the end of their trip.”
Stivers said she really needs the community to vote. “We could use the $120,000 grand prize but if we don’t win anything else, the girls have done an awesome job. I need people to tell their friends and share it with their family and neighbors.”
Principal Pearl Prince believes McCullough Academy for Girls can win. “We can do this,” said Prince. “I’m very thankful for the prizes so far but I just believe we can win the grand prize. The girls and Mrs. Stivers have worked so hard, the least we can do is support them with our vote. I’m appealing to everyone to come together for voting and then we need to celebrate what they’ve already accomplished.”
As of Friday, McCullough Academy for Girls’ video registered 1,655.
