Mayor Milo formally announced today that Rebecca D. Meyer will be appointed as the incoming City Attorney. Current City Attorney Don Baugher will be retiring at the end of August after serving for over 15 years under Mayors Smith, Chroback, Morris and Milo.
Mayor Milo stated, “Don has been a tremendous asset for the City for a number of years and has brought a wealth of experience and innovative ideas to the office. He leaves behind large shoes to fill and I am especially appreciative of his willingness to extend his timeline in a part-time capacity to help bring Rebecca up to speed. I am confident that Rebecca is able to meet the challenge and will bring her own drive, knowledge and creativity to the office that will greatly serve the citizens of La Porte. She’s highly sought after in the legal community and I’m excited to have her join the team!”
Rebecca Meyer is a native of La Porte who received her Bachelor’s in Psychology and Telecommunications from Indiana University, Bloomington in 2004 and her Juris Doctorate in 2007 from Valparaiso University. She clerked for La Porte Circuit Court Judge Robert Gilmore as well as the law firm of Newby, Lewis, Kaminski and Jones.
Meyer and her husband, B.J. McCuaig are relocating from Indianapolis where Rebecca served as the Deputy Prosecutor for Major Felonies for the Marion County Prosecuting Attorney. Meyer will join the City full-time on May 20th. Baugher will continue in part-time capacity through the end of August.
