The mayor applauded the way the Michigan City community has worked together to elevate the city during her first full  year as mayor.

“A year ago, just three months into my administration, I gave you a high-level update and introduced our leadership team,” Nelson Deuitch said. “Since then, our dedicated city employees, community leaders, and residents have worked tirelessly to move Michigan City forward.”

During her address, the mayor highlighted last year’s 17.46% drop in Michigan City crime, the upcoming construction of housing developments like the St. Andrews subdivision and the SoLa complex, as well as the measures being taken to address illegal dumping in the city. She also shared the strategies that her administration is implementing to combat homelessness and opioid use in Michigan City.

Nelson Deuitch asserted during her State of the City address that it is just as important to discuss the challenges that Michigan City is overcoming as it is to celebrate the city’s triumphs.

“With growth comes challenges,” she said. “We are addressing the challenges that our city is facing. I want to assure you all that we are not merely applying band-aids, but we are doing our best to implement true, lasting change here in Michigan City.”

The mayor introduced the “Keep Michigan City Beautiful” initiative, as well as several other neighborhood beautification organizations and initiatives. She also announced that $3.5 million of the $5 million goal for the construction of the Fedder’s Alley All-Inclusive Playground has been collected.

Nelson Deuitch calls upon all Michigan City residents to continue to work together to make their city the very best it can be.

“Let this be our charge moving forward; to build up, not tear down. To invest, not abandon. To unite, not divide,” she said. “When we lift up our neighbors, we lift up our city. It will take our collective energy, ideas, and determination to make Michigan City not just a good place to live, but a great place to call home.”
