Luis Tovar Joins United Way Teams as AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison

Luis-TovarLake Area United Way and United Way of Porter County announce the staff addition of Luis Tovar as the new AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison. Covering both organizations, he will implement the AFL-CIO Community Services Program and will provide assistance to workers and their families. With the goal to strengthen the existing partnership between the United Way organizations and union membership, he will work with local leaders and policy makers to help improve the social and economic conditions of working families and to reduce their need for services and assistance. Also, should the need arise, he will educate the members on the existing crucial public and private support systems for workers and their families, to make sure they are fully served. Ultimately helping to improve our communities, working to ensure everyone has access to the quality health and human services they need to live a good life.

Luis brings over 10 years of experience working closely with other labor liaisons serving United Way of Metro Chicago and surrounding communities through his past role as a Business Representative for IBEW Local #134. “With Luis on board, we look forward to an even closer working relationship with our valued union partners,” said Dan Murchek, President of Northwest Indiana Federation of Labor.

“The partnership provides union members a conduit to make real impact in the communities in which they live and work,” said Lisa Daugherty, President & CEO of Lake Area United Way. “Whether it be financial contributions, advocating for those in need or volunteering their skills, they are shaping their communities,” she added.

The American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and United Ways of Lake and Porter Counties have been in partnership to provide services to members of organized labor, their families and their communities since 1957. “Your local United Ways have always had a solid partnership with Organized Labor,” said Sharon Kish, President & CEO of United Way of Porter County. ‘We are proud to partner with the working women and men in our local unions who donate their hard-earned dollars and volunteer their time with United Way and make NWI a better place to live,” she added.
