Lubeznik Center for the Arts Presents “Sun Cycle” Mural Unveiling

Lubeznik Center for the Arts (LCA) along with the North Central Community Action Agency (NCCAA) is inviting the public to celebrate the “Sun Cycle” mural unveiling at NCCAA’s program center, the Madeline & George Smrt Community Center, located at 301 Grant Ave. in Michigan City, Ind. on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 1:30 p.m. CST.

Participants will enjoy refreshments, networking and the chance to meet the artist, Felix “FLEX” Maldonado Jr. Born and raised in East Chicago, Ind., Maldonado is a classically trained and award-winning artist with 30 years’ experience in murals, painting, graffiti art and commercial art direction.

Maldonado created the 8 feet by 8 feet “Sun Cycle” mural at the 2022 Lubeznik Arts Festival’s mural invitational last month in just two days.

The mural is being donated to NCCAA’s Madeline & George Smrt Community Center as part of Lubeznik Center for the Arts’ new mural program, which focuses on adding art into Michigan City neighborhoods.

In July, LCA kicked off their mural program with a huge, 14 feet by 140 feet mural on Michigan City’s west side designed by Bernard Williams with the mural themes and images proposed by the church’s parishioners. This community driven public art project was painted by Williams and neighborhood locals.

NCCAA is a not-for-profit addressing issues facing low-income people in counties of LaPorte, Starke, Pulaski, Porter, Newton, Jasper and Cass. Services NCCAA provides include energy assistance, weatherization, youth and senior programs, children's vision screenings, ramp programs, rental assistance and community service programs.
