Liberty Intermediate Students Learn Balloon Artistry in 2016

LIS-students-learn-balloon-artistry-01Balloon artist Brian Getz, pictured with Katie Billings, visited Liberty Intermediate School recently to share how balloon artistry uses the design process of engineering that they are learning in fifth grade this year and how his passion for balloon art turned into a career that uses many skills that require science, technology, engineering and math.

Students had an opportunity to learn hands-on to create a balloon house in small teams to take back to their classrooms as well as a small balloon dog for each of them. Getz, explained how he uses math and science daily in his planning and showed students how he calculates the size and amount of balloons he needs for a particular sculpture by sketching out his creations to make the calculations. He explained that it takes a team of people working together to make a large sculpture take on its shape.
