KV REMC enriches the Region’s children with sponsored trips and scholarships

Everyone knows how important it is to provide opportunities to the younger generations to help them grow and learn, but it’s special when organizations go the extra mile to make those opportunities happen. For years, Kankakee Valley REMC has given back to the communities it serves by providing many wonderful youth programs and this year already has many opportunities in store.

Kankakee Valley REMC will bring back two excellent summer trips this year: Youth Tour to Washington, D.C., and Camp Kilowatt in Brookston, Indiana. These experiences will not only help our youth learn and develop, but meet new friends and have fun while they’re doing it.

Camp Kilowatt, taking place June 7-10, is a fun and unique camp experience at Camp Tecumseh for sixth-grade students going into seventh grade. During this experience, kids will learn more about energy while making new friends and enjoying fun activities and games.

As if the camp wasn’t enough, students entering their senior year in 2023 can experience an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., as part of the Indiana Youth Tour. On this unforgettable seven-day trip kids will get to visit historical monuments and museums, attend meetings on Capitol Hill with Indiana’s congressional delegation, and make lifelong friends. The 2023 Indiana Youth Tour will be from June 11-18, 2023, and is something kids definitely won’t want to miss.

“Youth Tour is a great trip and a wonderful chance to see the sites, make new friends, and learn how everyone, even young people, can make a difference in the political process. Students that have attended in the past can’t say enough about the amazing experience they had and life-long friends they made,” stated Steeb.

Applications for both of these incredible trips are available online now! Youth Tour applications can be found on indianayouthtour.org and Camp Kilowatt’s applications can be found on campkilowatt.org. Everyone is welcome to apply for Youth Tour and Camp Kilowatt, but priority will be given to KV REMC member-consumers students. Applications are due online by March 1, so hurry and apply now.

On top of the youth summer trips, Kankakee Valley REMC also has an amazing scholarship program called Operation Round Up. Operation Round Up is a grant program through Kankakee Valley REMC that works by rounding each KV REMC member-consumers bill up to the nearest dollar. The extra amount that’s added is placed into a trust fund and awarded quarterly to non-profit organizations in the community. In addition, the trust fund awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors each spring.

Students of REMC member-consumers who participate in Operation Round Up can apply for one of six scholarships awarded each year. Two $2,000 and four $1,000 scholarships are available to students planning to continue their education at a college, university, or trade school this fall.

Applications are due at the Kankakee Valley REMC office by March 1 at 3:30 p.m. CST. To be eligible to apply, students’ parents or legal guardians must be Kankakee Valley REMC member-consumers and participate in Operation Round Up as of February 1, 2023. Students can download the scholarship application and guidelines by visiting kvremc.com and clicking on the Youth Programs button on the homepage.

With all these different opportunities available this year, it’s clear that Kankakee Valley REMC is committed to providing for the Region’s youth. These experiences have had an immeasurable impact in the past and there’s no doubt in anyone’s mind they’ll continue to do so in the future.
