Don't read books at the library – eat them!
The Kouts Public Library will host its first ever Edible Book Festival on Tuesday, April 1 at 6 p.m. at the library, located at 101 E. Daumer Road in Kouts. Participation and attendance at the festival is free. All participants must complete a registration form, available at the library, by March 25. Fun prizes will be awarded, and the event will culminate in feasting on everyone's creations.
On April 1 around the world, libraries and book stores hold Edible Book festivals to celebrate literacy and creativity, with a tasty twist. Participants must create a food-based representation of a book, whether it's recreating the cover, making a diorama of a scene from the book, or make a visual pun based on a book's theme or story. As long as it's completely edible and creative, the possibilities are endless.
The first Edible Book Festival was created by Judith A. Hoffberg and Béatrice Coron of France, and first celebrated on April 1, 2000. Their inspiration was late French gastronome Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, the author of Physiologie du goût, a witty meditation on food. According to the International Edible Book Festival's website,“April Fools Day is also the perfect day to eat your words and play with them as the "books" are consumed on the day of the event.” For ideas and inspiration, check out the International Edible Book Festival's website gallery at http://www.books2eat.com, or visit the Kouts Public Library's Facebook page.
