Kalli Adams, sales associate at Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana™, got her foot in the door at the company through a family friend who owned the business and encouraged her to continue to develop her interests into a career.
“I was getting a degree in business, and I was interested in pursuing [the subject matter] a bit more,” she said. “I decided that this would be something good to get me started. So I looked into it and I started, and then not long after that I got pretty adjusted and learned to like where I'm at. So then I thought ‘I think I might actually stick with it for a while.’”
Adams was originally drawn to sales for the one-on-one interaction with many different people. Through those interactions, she’s been able to learn a lot about both the product at hand and the people she sells to, something she greatly enjoys.
“I enjoy really getting a feel for talking to all the different kinds of people out there. It's interesting just to learn how to handle all these different kinds of people,” she said. “Honestly, it's helped me a lot with developing communication skills and things like that, and I think it's really helpful in those aspects of things. I get to talk to a lot of customers over the phone, so I get an opportunity to sell a lot of products, and the more I sell, the more I get to learn about them as well.”
While Adams had previous sales experience, she said it was at Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana™ where she was really able to thrive in the field.
“I worked for a heating and cooling business before this. I did a little bit of similar stuff here, but I definitely get more hands-on experience here than I did there,” she said.
To achieve that professional development, Adams mentioned it wouldn't have been possible without the people around her. Her coworkers have been a huge help to her over the past year and have been nothing short of welcoming and encouraging.
“My peers have definitely helped me out a lot while I've been here, so I've definitely learned a lot,” she said. “I know a lot more now than I did when I started for sure. I really like the overall environment here.”
Adams said she’s grateful for her time at Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana™. She’ll be celebrating her one year anniversary with the company in May, and is excited to see what’s next in the coming years.
"I've enjoyed all of my experiences so far,” she said.
While Adams has gained a lot of knowledge about garage doors and their installation over the past year, she said there is still so much she has yet to learn, and is passionate about learning as much as she can about the craft.
“I'm definitely looking forward to getting a little bit more opportunity when it comes to learning more about the products that I'm selling, maybe even getting to learn more about the way they work and things like that,” she said. “A lot of field operation is something I don't know much about just yet, but I'm definitely hoping to be able to figure out more about that and just move along the way and see where it takes me.”
