Junior Board’s Service Projects Make an Impact

The Junior Board of Directors demonstrated their commitment to community outreach and support through the completion of two service projects last month that made a difference in the lives of families and individuals.

Throughout the eight-month program, students were required to complete individual community service hours. For each hour served, KV REMC pledged a set dollar amount. Students reported their monthly service hours at each program session, which were tracked and totaled at the end of the program. The funds, provided by KV REMC Operation Round Up, were then used to support the students' group community service projects.

Their first project focused on supporting new mothers at the Women's Care Center, located in both LaPorte and Plymouth. The students assembled and delivered layette care packages filled with essential items for newborns. Each center also received a cash donation along with an additional supply of diapers, wipes, and infant clothing.

The second community service project focused on something not only meaningful to the students but also something that some had been personally affected by: suicide. The Junior Board organized a Suicide Prevention Walk/Run that drew more than 100 participants. Attendees came together in remembrance and solidarity, some walking for friends or loved ones lost to suicide. Between the money raised by the Junior Board through their community service work, donations from area businesses, and race registrations, the event generated an impressive $5,000 in proceeds that will be donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention-Indiana Chapter.

"The students this year showed great leadership and a desire to truly make a difference in their community. They took on some very complex community service projects and worked to make them both very successful. We are reminded that our youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow but are leading today," stated Amanda Steeb, director of marketing & communications.

The students set the example of what can be accomplished when young people come together with a shared purpose to serve others. Their effort on both projects reflects their determination, teamwork, and compassion for serving those in need.
