Internationally acclaimed musician to lead discussions, performances
The Indiana University Northwest School of the Arts is hosting a three-day residency focusing on music making and wellbeing. Acclaimed pianist Dr. Makiko Hirata — also known as “Dr. Pianist” — will offer an exciting range of programming designed to support the growing musical program at IU Northwest.
Hirata has graced stages worldwide, including performances in New York City’s Carnegie Hall and Seiji Ozawa Hall, home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed as a featured soloist under the batons of legendary conductors, including the Kennedy Center Honors recipient Leon Fleisher.
Hirata is passionately committed to harnessing the power of music for healing and unity. Seamlessly blending artistic excellence with advocacy, Hirata has positioned herself as a pivotal figure in showcasing the profound influence of music on societal well-being.

March 27 at 1 p.m.: Befriend your Butterflies
Black Box Theater, Arts & Sciences (2nd floor)
A lecture led by Hirata examining the concept of performance anxiety through the lens of psychology and musical performance.
March 28 at 1 p.m.: Creative Careers
Black Box Theater, Arts & Sciences (2nd floor)
A dynamic panel discussion with Hirata (and others) exploring the many professional pathways available to musicians, artists and other creative students.
March 29 at 4 p.m.: Songs of the Voiceless
Mainstage Theater, Arts & Sciences Building (2nd floor)
An hour-long matinee performance of virtuosic music by Debussy, Gershwin and Chopin, as well as arrangements of spirituals by Margaret Bonds.
Hirata’s lectures are free and open to the public; however, the concert will be ticketed $10 for general admission and $5 for IU Northwest students, faculty, staff and attendees aged 60-plus.

About “Dr. Pianist”
A US-Japan Leadership Program Fellow and a founding member of TEMPO: Music for Climate Action, Hirata has been honored as Coeuraj’s 2022 ‘Global Courage Fellow’ for her instrumental role in fostering trust and unity in times of division.
Holding a Doctor of Musical Arts from Rice University, Hirata’s influence extends beyond the stage. A respected educator, Hirata has taught at New York University, Rice University, and Stanford University, in addition to delivering master classes and lectures globally.
