The School of the Arts' Winter 2024 exhibitions feature collections from Stephen Marc and selected works from artists represented by Chicago's Zolla/Lieberman Gallery
Collections from photographer Stephen Marc are now on exhibit in the School of the Arts Gallery at Indiana University Northwest.
Raised on the South Side of Chicago, Stephen Marc is a 2021 Guggenheim fellow and has taught at the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and Arizona State University since 1998. This show is a combination of photographs and digital montages featured in two books: American / True Colors (published in 2021) and Street Cat Tales and Tangled Times (published in 2023).
Marc’s work explores American identity and sense of place during the transformative and polarizing recent events in America: the COVID-19 pandemic, the social unrest after the murder of George Floyd and the reversal of Roe v. Wade.
“My interest is in public space gatherings, from everyday rituals to special events, where American character is revealed,” Marc said. “I’m searching for the ways we connect to place and interact with each other while navigating the conundrums of coexistence that exemplify the American experience.”
Indeed, in capturing images that show protests and candid moments across the spectrum of races and political beliefs, these photographs invite us to meditate on the diversity, complexity and beauty of American culture.
Zolla/Lieberman Gallery
Gallery for Contemporary Arts (Savannah Center)

Concurrently on display in IU Northwest’s Gallery for Contemporary Art, located in the Savannah Center, is a curated selection of works from artists represented by the esteemed Zolla/Lieberman Gallery in Chicago.
Owned by art collector and dealer William Lieberman, Zolla/Lieberman has been a lynchpin of the Chicago contemporary art scene since it opened in River North in 1976. Today, the gallery shows sculptures, paintings and works on paper of established and up-and-coming artists from around the world.
The show, More Than True, will include art in a range of mediums, including works by painter William Conger (born 1937), sculptor Joshua Garber (born 1963) and silkscreen and graphic artist Glenn Wexler (born 1963).
Both galleries are open Monday through Thursday, 12-5 p.m. The exhibits will be on view through March 7. For locations and the most up-to-date information about our programming please see The School of the Arts website.
