The Indiana University Northwest Wellness Team, the Northwest Indiana Suicide Prevention Council, and the Regional Mental Health Center are sponsoring this year’s “Faces of Suicide” conference from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7 in the Bruce W. Bergland Auditorium, located in the Savannah Center.
The conference is intended to offer information and hope to professionals, individuals, families, friends and leaders who want to make a difference in the lives of those they care about. The conference’s speakers will provide attendees with information about how to best utilize available community resources, spiritual healing and counseling services to help those in crisis.

Assessment in Depression and Suicide
Olieth Lightborne, RN, MSN, will offer insight into the assessment of depression and suicidal thinking, and useful tools for minimizing potential liability.
10:45 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Ethical Issues When Working with Clients Who are Suicidal
Lorna Hecker, Ph.D., will address the clinical, ethical, and legal issues that impact the work of managing suicide risk. Ethical issues will be discussed in the context of empirically derived core competencies set by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center. Each core competency brings with it a variety of potential ethical issues that will be explored relative to practice. The role of ethics, state regulations and federal HIPAA regulations in treating minors at risk for suicide will also be explored.

Registration is $35 for students and $65 for all others. The fee includes a continental breakfast, boxed lunch, zip drive and a Professional Continuing Education Unit (CEU) certificate. Registration is due November 1 (late registrations may be accepted if space is available).
