One hundred twenty-five campers participated in the IU Northwest RedHawk Athletics camps on campus during July. Director of Athletics Kristofer Schnatz and his staff welcomed volleyball and basketball campers of all ages for two weeks of instruction and fun.
“We enjoy camp week here on campus, it is an opportunity for us to connect with our community while we promote our student-athletes and our program” said Schnatz.
Women’s basketball head coach Ryan Shelton founded the kids basketball camp six years ago and has played a major role in strengthening the RedHawks’ relationship within our community.
“This is a great opportunity for children to experience our university at a young age and enjoy a fun week of camp in the summer,” Shelton said. “We look forward to it every year.”
Coach Shelton’s kids’ camp involves children from 6 to 12 years old. They have the opportunity to learn the basics of basketball, teamwork and good sportsmanship. Coach Schnatz developed the 13 to 17 skills camp in 2014 in order to provide an opportunity for campers to continue their development through sport. Coach Diane White followed their lead and had a great turnout for her inaugural volleyball camp this summer, which was held one week before the annual basketball camp.
Coach Schnatz and his staff promote the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership throughout the week. These camps promote individual development, teamwork and fun. All three camps have now received positive feedback from campers, parents and the campus community.
The IU Northwest RedHawk Athletic Program has continued its planned expansion from three to seven teams. The Gary, Ind., campus now offers athletic opportunities in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, and women’s volleyball. Your next opportunity to support the RedHawks is on Sept. 26, 2015, at the 2nd Annual Walk for the Hawks.
Support our student-athletes through an online donation or ask us how to join the walk.
