Indiana University Northwest’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs announces October diversity events

Gary, Ind. – Indiana University Northwest’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs is hosting a variety of events tied to national observations during the month of October, including:

  • Domestic Violence Awareness Month
  • Disability Employment Awareness Month
  • Global Diversity Month
  • LGBTQI+ History Month
  • National Hispanic Heritage Month

The events aim to cultivate new levels of learning and understanding which challenge, inspire, liberate, and ultimately transform the hearts, minds, and actions of individuals and society. All events are free and open to the community and will be held both on campus and via Zoom. Start times vary and participants are asked to register in advance, unless otherwise noted.

Schedule of Events

October 11 to October 21

  • Clothesline Project

Women and Gender Studies displays decorative, symbolic t-shirts created by students, faculty, and staff to raise awareness of domestic violence.

Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Savannah Center Lobby

October 13

  • INTERSECTIONS: Body Diversity

Community members are invited to examine the personal experiences of LGBTQ+ people, including systemic oppression and discrimination, but also queer joy.

  • And So I Stayed: Film Screening and Discussion

Watch this powerful documentary which explores the lives of women who were incarcerated after fighting back against abuse.

  • Whose History? The Role of Record Keepers in History-making

Explore how record keeper’s identities influence the narratives preserved through a case study on South Bend, Indiana newspapers.

  • Overcoming Adversity

IU Northwest welcomes Former IUPD-NW Officer Melvin Blakley, who returns to campus to share an inspirational message about readjusting to life after overcoming adversity.

  • Exploring Intimate Partner Violence

Dr. Solinas-Saunders will host a presentation focused on the normalization of violence within intimate contexts and the family across countries, cultures, and generations.

  • Safe Zone Workshop

Learn methods to create a safer, more inclusive environment for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer/Questioning, and Intersexed (LGBTQI) people.
