Indiana State Police Off Duty Trooper Helps Family in Distress

Indiana-State-Police-Trooper-Khari-WaltonOn Friday, May 8th, at approximately 11:39 a.m (CDT) on 61st Street just east of I-65 at the Southside Speedway, an off duty trooper hears a call of a subject in a vehicle with trouble breathing, stops and gives assistance.

While heading home in his fully marked police vehicle, Trooper Khari Walton, an eight year trooper working out of the Lowell State Police Post, hears a dispatch of a subject having difficulty breathing. At the time, he was just minutes from the gas station where the family was making the call. The daughter advised that her father was having trouble breathing, lost consciousness and she was requesting help. Region 1 radio advised an ambulance had been dispatched but was requesting any unit close to the area to check to see what assistance could be offered. Trooper Walton pulled in behind the van, walked up and after assessing the situation, removed the subject from the passenger side of the van and laid him out on the ground.

After reassessing the patient, he found a slight pulse but the breathing was light. He instructed the daughter to talk to her father and comfort him as much as possible. Continuing aid to the patient, the breathing started to improve and the patient was becoming more responsive. At this time, the ambulance arrived and the EMT's took over the situation.

“It was great to have a trooper out there even if they are off duty!” said Lieutenant Terry Gose Commander of the Lowell Post. “I am very proud of the fact that even when off duty, our troopers respond to assist in whatever manner they can to assist the public.”
