Indiana Senate Honors PNW Student with Intern of the Year Scholarship

Purdue University Northwest student Magdalena Madrigal, a native of Naperville, Ill., recently received the 2017 Verizon Intern of the Year Scholarship in recognition of her efforts during the recent Indiana General Assembly.

The $3,000 prize is awarded annually to an outstanding intern in each of the four legislative caucuses. Madrigal, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in business, worked with Sen. Greg Taylor (D-Indianapolis) and Sen. David Niezgodski (D-South Bend) during the 2017 Indiana Senate session. She hopes to learn more about policy-making by pursuing a master’s degree in public administration.

Reflecting on her internship, Madrigal said, “My experience was rewarding because of the knowledge I gained about the legislative process, as well as the members of my intern class who truly made the experience an irreplaceable memory.”

As a legislative intern her duties included constituent correspondence, staffing committee hearings and working closely with senators to research various issues. The annual internship opportunity is designed to provide valuable learning experiences for students who are interested in the legislative process.

The Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus internship is open to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, recent graduates and those seeking an advanced degree. Interns may earn academic credit from their respective universities.
