Hundreds Try to Tackle The Beast Boot Camp 5K

Approximately 200 runners answered the Beast Boot Camp 5k challenge this morning at the Lake County Fairgrounds. This is not your normal 5k, but rather a physical and mental challenge lead and supported by the local U.S. Marines.

Today’s event has become an annual event run by Tim Fealy and Hometown Happenings. The challenging 5k course is designed and coordinated with assistance from the Marines. A portion of the proceeds go to support local military veterans and programs.

The exercises are not announced in advance and have the element of surprise. This year’s exercises included a bear walk, star jumps and the ever popular ruck sack (approximately 35 pounds) and stair climb. Participants did two loops of the course and had great support from current and future Marines.

“Races like Spartan and Tough Mudder are similar in nature, but this has a different element. The Marines from start to finish,” said Tim Feely, Race Director.

There were various ages and fitness levels that participated, some with help from family and friends cheering them on, and some with the help of the young recruits running them into the finish. Throughout the event, everyone was entertained by music from Five Star Entertainment and Jen Zarate. In addition, retired military vehicles and weapons were on display from The American Museum for Military Vehicles.

Other local organizations that were supporters of the race were Crown Point Cross Fit, Carriage Court Pizza and The Family Flyer.
