Humane Society Calumet Area Announces Coloring Contest

Humane Society Calumet Area is hosting a coloring contest open to children in grades kindergarten through 5th grade.

Held as part of the organization’s humane education program, this coloring contest is designed to increase awareness among school-aged children about animal adoption.

One winner from each grade will be chosen and will receive a HSCA t-shirt. One grand prize winner will be selected and will have a chance to have their artwork featured on the cover of HSCA’s quarterly newsletter.

In addition, the school with the most entries will receive a signed copy of Shelter Us: The Tails of Max and Miles, written by a HSCA volunteer and retired Lake Central High School math teacher Randall Starewicz. The book features two shelter dogs who never give up on one another as the main characters.

Winners will be announced at noon on June 7 during HSCA’s Paws in the Park event at Main Square Park in Highland.

Teachers and parents can download the coloring sheets and humane education materials at www.hscalumet.org/aspca.asp. Each entry must have the child’s name, grade and school written on the front of the page and a phone number on the back side.

Entries are due on May 31, 2014 and can be mailed or delivered to the shelter at: Humane Society Calumet Area, 421 45th St, Munster, IN 46321.

The contest also will be held in conjunction with HSCA’s participation in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge. The challenge is a nationwide competition for animal shelters (and their communities) aimed at getting more animals adopted or returned to their owners than ever before. This summer HSCA will compete for a chance at more than $600,000 in grant funding, including a grand prize of $100,000.

The challenge takes place during the months of June through August and the HSCA has set a goal of placing 675 animals in forever homes during that time. Coloring contest entries will be on display in the shelter during these months so the children can view their entry.
