Hospice Marketing Director Honored for Breast Cancer Advocacy at Annual Pink Tie Affair

For Damian Rico, Marketing Director at Hospice of the Calumet Area, a heartfelt phone call from his longtime friend Crystal Taliefero in June 2021 would change his perspective on advocacy and health education forever. Taliefero, a world-renowned musician who has toured with Billy Joel since 1989, shared devastating news: she had been diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive forms of the disease.

Taliefero’s journey required an immediate double mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Despite the gravity of the diagnosis, she was thankful for her proactive screenings every six months, which detected the disease early and saved her life.

“We were devastated but prayerful for healing and strength,” Rico recalled. “The timing was surreal. The pandemic had paused Crystal’s tour schedule with Billy Joel, giving her the space and time to focus on her health. It reminded us that everything happens for a reason.”

When Rico asked how he could support her, Taliefero’s answer was simple yet profound: help tell her story. She wanted to raise awareness about early detection and the importance of health education in saving lives.

In recognition of his efforts to spread awareness and his broader contributions to health education, Rico was honored at the 13th Annual Pink Tie Affair hosted by Laini Fluellen Charities, Inc. The event, which celebrates individuals and organizations advancing breast cancer education and prevention, also recognized Frankie Fesko, Powers Health Chairperson of the Board; Jen Sanders, Methodist Hospital Breast Cancer Manager; and the Northern Indiana Chapter of The Links, Inc.

“I was very honored to receive the recognition but even more proud to help them help others through education,” said Rico. “At Hospice of the Calumet Area, education is a priority for our staff, volunteers, donors, and especially our Board of Directors.”

Founded in 2009 by a group of breast cancer survivors and their supporters, Laini Fluellen Charities has raised over $200,000 through grassroots efforts. The organization focuses on improving outcomes for young women at high risk for triple-negative breast cancer across Northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland area.

Through partnerships and events like the Pink Tie Affair, Laini Fluellen Charities continues to amplify its mission while inspiring others to prioritize health education and early detection. Rico’s collaboration with Taliefero and his ongoing advocacy exemplify the power of storytelling in transforming lives.

“Health education saves lives,” Rico emphasized. “Crystal’s courage to share her journey is a testament to that truth, and it’s a privilege to play even a small role in this fight.”
