Holiday Cheer in East Chicago

City-of-East-ChicagoIt’s the season to be jolly and with Christmas right around the corner, the City of East Chicago is getting into the holiday spirit with lots of fun to offer the entire family. Residents are invited to join Mayor Anthony Copeland and the City of East Chicago for the Magic of Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonies. The event is set to begin at 5:30pm on Friday December 6th on the corner of Main and Broadway (Harbor).

Tree lighting is a tradition that began in 1882 when Edward Johnson, wired red, white and blue bulbs on an evergreen tree. A couple years later, President Grover decorated a Christmas tree at the White House in 1895, where the public saw and began to follow. This special ceremony in East Chicago will hopefully bring warmth to the hearts of all residents. After the tree lighting ceremonies, there will be a big event held at City Hall at 6:30pm.

Hot chocolate will be served as well as an opportunity to take a family photo with Santa and all of his elves. There will be free supplies while last and children who are present must be with a parent that has identification. This program is being sponsored by Parks and Recreation, The Mayor’s Office and Public Works Department.
