Chances are if you’ve driven through Northwest Indiana you’ve gone past homes built by Heritage Homes, a builder with a long history in the region.
“It all began with my dad, Lewis Tilford, back when he was a young man in the 1950’s,” said John Tilford, current head of Heritage Homes. “He was building houses in Portage and then moved to Valparaiso in the late 1960’s. We’ve just continued that tradition through today.”
Since then, Heritage Homes has grown in both its ambitions and scope, moving beyond Porter county and into other areas of the Northwest Indiana region.
“We build all over in Porter, LaPorte and nearside Lake County now," stated Tilford. "We don’t build inexpensive homes, right now we build middle range homes for homebuyers. But we’re hoping to change our market focus more towards single-family homes in the future.”
When asked why he was attached to working in the region, Tilford cited all the great aspects of Northwest Indiana.
“Well there is a lot of great things to do, there is Lake Michigan and Chicago close by, but we’re far enough removed from all that to keep a small-town feeling," explained Tilford. "We have a lot of rural stuff around us but we also have a lot of first rate shopping and entertainment. I think by and large the people here are laid back and friendly.”
Through that growth, Heritage Homes gained a partner in Northwest Indiana realty group, Boulder Bay.
“I think they’re a top notch real estate firm and Lynda Anderson represents the highest integrity and professionalism in the real estate industry. They do a great job marketing and helping us to succeed,” said Tilford.
That focus on professionalism shows in the talent Heritage Homes chooses to showcase at their company.
“First and foremost, we want people who will represent our company well through integrity, workmanship and safety. We don’t want people with a track record or who tend to do sloppy work. We really look for people who will help us put our best foot forward with the customer, so we can generate new business from their satisfaction,” explained Tilford.
That level of talent is perhaps why Heritage Homes has been consistently rewarded for its work on projects over the last several years.
“Our sister company is Restore Tech Construction and the projects we’ve worked on with them have won the Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce Community Improvement awards in 2015, 2016 and 2017,” said Tilford.
Of course, Tilford is still aiming high for this year’s crop of projects.
“So that’s three consecutive years in a row of wins and I’m aiming for a forth with a project we just currently finished up,” explained Tilford.
It helps that Heritage Homes offers services to it’s customers that reflects upon it’s winning spirit.
“We have a warranty that’s better than most places and if we don’t produce at a high level of work we’re in trouble,” Tilford said.
