Help Students Develop Grit to Succeed in 2014

indiana-youth-institute-logoOne of the most significant predictors of postsecondary success is not a student’s SAT score, IQ or high school GPA. Instead, it is the character trait called grit.

To help students better succeed in education after high school, the Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) is bringing an expert to Gary to give mentors and others who work with high school students practical skills to strengthen students’ grit and ability to successfully transition to postsecondary education.

The informative and interactive training will feature speaker Patricia Simes, executive director for Communities In Schools of Lake County. Simes will discuss what grit is and how it challenges assumptions about why some students persist in college and others do not.

The training will run from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on April 26, at The Rock Church in the Hospitality Room, 5400 W. 29th Ave., Gary, 46406. Free parking is available.

The training is free, but reservations are required by April 22. RSVP to Kristin Casas via phone at (219) 844-8673 ext. 13 or via email at klcasas@msn.com.

This training is made possible by the collaborative efforts of USA Funds, Urban Reach, Communities in Schools of Lake County, Indiana Mentoring Partnership and IYI.

The Indiana Youth Institute promotes the healthy development of Indiana children and youth by serving the people, institutions, and communities that impact their well-being.
