The Indiana University Northwest women’s soccer team scored twice in the first half to grab a 2-1 victory over Lawrence Tech Wednesday evening in the 2024 season opener.
The RedHawks, who are 1-0-0 stay in Southeast Michigan to take on Michigan-Dearborn at 11 a.m. (CT) Friday at Crestwood High School.
After giving up an early goal, IUN settled down and didn’t allow the Blue Devils a clean look at the goal for the rest of the opening half.
In the 28th minute on a corner kick, the RedHawks hit the equalizer after Zoey Wells shot was deflected in the air and Asia Garcia headed the loose ball in.
Six minutes later Olivia Hansen had the chance to put IUN on top, but her shot went wide to the right. Then right before halftime, freshman Jiana Church took a pass from fellow newcomer Abbigail Cutler to give the RedHawks a 2-1 advantage.
In the first 15 minutes of the second half, LTU had two shots with one going wide and the other stopped by Isabel Escalera.
The RedHawks then had an opportunity to score a third time, but Salome Hernandez’s shot was turned away.
The Blue Devils turned up the pressure as the clock was ticking down getting five looks, but Escalera made two more of her four saves, while the other three LTU shots went wide of the box.
With just over a minute remaining, the RedHawks put one last attack on, but as Garcia was looking to put away her second goal through the five hole, she could not sneak the ball through the keepers legs.
